Historical Rheinland-Pfalz

Schloss Crottorf near Friesenhagen.

Schloss Crottorf.

Entering the abbey at Marienstatt, Rheinland-Pfalz.

Marienstatt abbey.

Inside the abbey's Gothic church.

Historical market place in Hachenburg, Rheinland-Pfalz.

Half-timbered house with free-swinging pendulum clock in Hachenburg's market square.

Ever seen an English telephone box used as a library before? No, nor had I — until I found this one in Hachenburg!
Wildberg, a small village just over the border with Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Re telephone boxes - yes, I have! There's one that looks almost exactly the same not far from here. I suspect there are a lot more. Usually one has to actually go into the phone box to realize.

I have mixed feelings about these diy libraries. Do they undermine Oxfam shops? I appreciate the need for free access to books but I suspect -certainly in the UK- they're mainly set up by and used by Guardianesque people like me who can afford books (and certainly afford Oxfam books).

Very beautiful. I've seen those little libraries. Think they are wonderful and so cute. Some in the US are but a small box on a post. I expect a child would be thrilled with them.

Woderful photos of an area I have not visted in very many years. I tend to hang out more north along the Hannover Berlin coridor.
A recycled phone booth for printed texts will soon be a rare novelty as the tech pushes us beyond .

On a bike ride in Aberdeenshire I came across a very welcome 'cafe in a telephone box' a few weeks ago. A coffee machine, water, a tin of biscuits and an box for 'contributions'. Perfect!
Cheers, Gail.

It looks like most are familiar with phone box libraries except me!

Dominic — I don't think they will make any difference at all to charity shop sales.

Thanks everyone for reading and commenting!

I loved looking at your photos and reading your blog. I haven't done much walking in the Rhineland myself, I must add it to my list of places to go
