Home Is Where Your Tent Is

I left Glen Nevis and drove further north, first alongside Loch Lochy, and then through Glen Shiel, which is dominated by the tall, shapely peaks of The Five Sisters of Kintail. I pitched my tent in Shiel Bridge at the head of Loch Duich. The campsite was small, cheap (£5 a night) and uncrowded. I soon made myself at home...

Shiel Bridge is the gateway to the lonely and beautiful Glenelg peninsula. Just one road leads in - a narrow, single-track road which climbs via a series of hairpin bends high up to the Mam Ratagan pass and down through Glen More to Glenelg. A little further south of here lies Sandaig, once home to Gavin Maxwell and his otters. In his book Ring Of Bright Water Maxwell disguises Sandaig under the name of Camusfeàrna (Bay of Alders). But, when reading the book in my early 20s, I quickly worked out its real location from clues in the text. And I've wanted to make a pilgrimage there ever since...

Didn't see this post earlier. I've been having a lot of trouble with Blogger the last couple of days—as have many other folks, apparently.

Anyway, nice looking setup—neat, with all you really need, although in my dotage, I usually carry along a folding chair so I can sit comfortably before my campfire—like those shots of Hemingway and Percival on safari—and sip schnapps while listening to coyotes yip off in the jackpine swamp, and watching the northern lights pulsate over Lake Superior.

There are times, and I kid you not, that I consider chucking everything and becoming a road gypsy, living under canvas for months at a stretch in cheap campgrounds. I could could do that a be happier than most people might believe.

The folding chair - AND folding table - were just out of sight, Grizzled. (Don't want folks thinking I'm living TOO luxuriously! After all, camping is supposed to be a wee bit spartan, is it not?)

I too have considered the 'road gypsy' idea...

Another dreamer here of living the life of a gyspy - away from the world of home in one place only. Now do I spy a lovely feather-down comfortable pillow in the tent? The luxuries we don't see when we live in houses.

The portable CD/radio, copy of 'Hello' magazine and bottle of scotch were concealed behind the left flap, Bella...
