Gandhi Gets My Vote

I want to vote for a Gandhi
Or a Martin Luther King,
Someone who sets the soul on fire
And makes the pulses ring.

I want to vote for a Churchill,
Or an F. D. Roosevelt,
Someone who lifts the spirits up
And makes the heartstrings melt,

Someone like Helen Suzman,
Nelson Mandela or Joan of Arc,
Someone who changes history,
Forging light out of the dark,

A Lech Walesa, Vaclav Havel,
A Kennedy or Obama,
An Albert Schweizer, Thomas Merton,
A Buddha or Dalai Lama.

I want to vote for a Son of God
Or a Saint of High Renown,
But I know in the end I'll have to vote
For Cameron, Clegg or Brown.

I NOW OFFICIALLY DECLARE THIS BLOG TO BE AN ELECTION-FREE ZONE

I laughed at the last line. My sister and I are married to Camerons (they're not related), and my mother-in-law was a Brown. I hope you have someone worth voting for, at least a little bit.

Absolutely, how often do you come across someone really worth voting for. Though I did vote for my mum once.
thanks for the poem

I've considered abstaining in some past elections - because that's a kind of vote, isn't it - in the same way that negative numbers are still numbers? But I don't really like doing this, it can easily be seen as laziness or indifference. I'd rather try and be positive.

David Miliband (Labour Foreign Secretary) came over very well in tonight's 'Question Time' on TV. Whereas Theresa May for the Conservatives not so good. Just in my opinion.

Yes, my mum, God rest her, always got my vote.

Quite humorous--I chuckled--but with a serious point.

It is all a bit depressing. We know we should vote and yet we know it's a crappy system (though there are much worse...). We know we HAVE to keep far right groups from growing more powerful but we know a lot of the main party politicians are fairly uninspiring.

My Mum wanted me to go into politics at one point. Can you imagine..? A Blair babe...I would have strangled him with my bare hands.

How does Gordon Babe or Cameron Babe sound, Rachel? No, I didn't think so!

Hi Forest! Nice to hear from you. Hope you are OK.
